Informal Care and Labor Market Participation: Care for Kin with ADL Disability
Ham Sun-Yu

Abstract
This study purposes on investigating the effect of caregiving for family member who are with ADL disability on labor market participation. Since time is scarce resource, participating informal care reduces the other activities. If this leads to reduction in paid work, it can be the problem of social security. To measure the accurate effect of informal care on paid labor participation, this study applied fixed panel analysis and lagged dependent model which controls possible endogeneity problem due to the reverse causality. The results showed that informal care reduces 2~4%p of labor market participation. However the effect becomes 4~7%p for caregivers who deliver care more than 40 hours a week. For men who are giving care more than 40 hours a week, the effect size is more than 10% which is much larger than female caregivers. This implies that male caregiver takes higher risk of exit from labor market though men is less likely become main caregiver.
